At Carmel, there is a recent history of successful fall sports teams. Our football team is a perennial State championship contender, the women’s soccer team is coming off of a season in which they were State and National champions, our men’s tennis team is on track for a third consecutive State championship, and our women’s cross-country team is on pace to do the same. However, this year, one other fall sports team is beginning to steal the spotlight.

The volleyball team hasn’t just won every game, they have dominated. At this point in the season, they are 12-0 and haven’t lost a single set.

Not losing a set in 12 games? Sounds pretty impressive. Oh, and not to mention that two of those sweeps were against nationally ranked Sacred Heart (KY) and previous state #1 Avon. The latest edition of Maxpreps.com rankings have Carmel ranked at #16 in the nation, followed closely by Penn (#18).

So all of the sudden, one of the few sports that Carmel has never won an IHSAA State Title in has a chance to change that. However, any athlete knows that it is easier to compete if your peers are supporting you, so why not show the volleyball team some support?

I’m not saying that you have to travel to every volleyball game, and I won’t be a hypocrite and say that I will make it to every game, but at the very least, if you see a player in the hall on a game day, at least tell them “good luck.” It’s time for them to realize that their impressive season has not gone unnoticed.

With the help of the whole student body, the volleyball team’s run will continue. So if you have a chance, try to make it to a game or support them in any way that you can. I know it’s early in the season, and it may seem premature to be saying all of this, but these girls deserve the support of the student body. If a performance like theirs so far this season can’t gain our support, then what will be able to? There’s nothing else that they can do to earn the support. So it’s time, Carmel High School, for us to hop on the CHS volleyball team bandwagon. I call shotgun.
