Kids’ Corner is a class where seniors have the opportunity to teach a preschool class. According to Kids’ Corner teacher Kimberly Lenzo, the preschoolers had their first day on Sept. 21, but even after a few weeks of teaching, the seniors continue to meet and overcome obstacles each day.
“The students are working on transitions and classroom management. They are coming up with a lot of ideas for this specific group of students,” Lenzo said. “Teachers need to assess the characteristics of the class and develop strategies that will provide a positive learning environment. They are really stepping up and developing great ideas.”
According to Kelly Clark, Kids’ Corner member, there’s more that goes into teaching the class than just playing with the kids.

“The kids are here only for the second half of our class, the rest of the time we have to set up everything and go over our lesson
plans to make sure everything runs smoothly,” Clark said. “It can be hard to keep control over all of them, so we have to be prepared, but it gets easier with every class.”
Lenzo said there are ten boys and five girls in the preschool class. She said this gives the seniors a lot of energy to control as well as have fun with and that each class is a learning experience for not only the preschoolers, but also the seniors.
Hannah Reese, another Kids’ Corner member, said it can be difficult to make sure all the classes go well when there’s so many different personalities in one room.
“It’s hard because you want to make sure the kids have a good time and you want to impress their parents,” Reese said. “We have to make sure our lesson plans teach the kids well, but I think we’re all starting to get the hang of how to lead the classroom.”
