According to Sameer Manchanda, Chess Club president and senior, Chess Club will be participating in the 2014 spring state chess tournament, which will be on March 22 in Terre Haute, IN. Additionally, the club has delayed ordering club T-shirts until the weather warms up.
Manchanda said the club members interested in participating in the state tournament must compete in a tournament to determine placement. According to Manchanda, the club will send two teams if more than eight players are interested. Additional information regarding the state tournament can be found on the club Facebook page.
“We can have alternates as well; however, we try to send teams of four so that all our players play all five rounds,” Manchanda said via email.
Club sponsor Margaret Winans said this will be the third year in a row that the club is participating in the spring state chess tournament. Jimmy Zheng, club member and senior, said he plans on participating in the tournament. Zheng said he believes the club had high chances of a repeat victory at state.
“We have a very strong club this year-perhaps our strongest ever,” Manchanda said. “I think we have a good chance of defending our title.”
