Junior Jarod Throckmorton and senior Ruth Xing compete in an event in which they have to build a device that will catch an egg. The next Science Olympiad competition is on Feb. 28.

According to Science Olympiad sponsor Cynthia Henry, students will compete at the regional competition on Feb. 28 at Butler University.

Celina Tragesser, logistics manager and senior, said there are two teams consisting of 30 students who will be competing at this competition.

“In order to make it to the State level, we must place in at least the top five, so we will be working very hard over the next month to prepare,” said Tragesser.

“To do this, we will be encouraging our studiers to rigorously study the material for their subject area, and working closely with our build teams to fine-tune and improve what we have,” Tragesser said.

She said meetings will be mandatory for all students competing at regionals and the officers will help the teams with studying and test taking techniques. New to this year, there will be more logistical preparation which should improve the organization at the competition said Tragesser. She also said the build sector of the team has a lot of work to do, so they will be meeting more frequently and doing more tests to decide which make it to the competition.

“Right now, our builds are average, but not as great as we want them to be,” Tragesser said.

She said the officers hop the extra meeting will improve the technique of the team and bring out the potential they have.

“All in all, this year our  goal is to rival the teams that have always been far ahead of us, and overcome the differences in resources of teams. Looking back to last year, it is easy to say that we arguably have the smartest team in the state, and one of the smartest teams in the nation,” Tragesser said. “All we need to do is prepare in such a way that all this potential is able to come out at the competitions.”
