Quiz Bowl members begin another of their Monday afternoon practices, during which they read through “packets” and answer questions testing a wide variety of knowledge across disciplines. Brian Pho, club co-president and junior, said, “We are excited to see the club grow this year, as we have many new members who are eager to play and improve.”

Quiz Bowl continues to meet every Monday in Room A229 following the team’s performance at the Indiana Kickoff Tournament on Oct. 7. According to club sponsor Matthew Cinkoske, the Carmel A team was able to win the tournament, remaining undefeated over the course of the competition.

“My favorite part of the team’s performance and what I am most proud of was the sportsmanship our A team displayed,” Cinkoske said. “I had multiple parents from other teams come up to me after our games and compliment how the team conducted themselves and treated their competitors. While we of course aim to win, the way we treat others is even more important than whether we lose or win, in my opinion.”

Brian Pho, club co-president and junior, said the team plans to attend the Indiana Association of School Principals Regional, where they hope to qualify for the State Championship. Cinkoske added that the team will be participating in the Anita Zuber Memorial Tournament in Hicksville, Ohio in November.

“Looking forward, we plan to continue improving our play by covering the gaps that we have found after our first tournament,” Pho said.“I’m looking forward to seeing our new members grow in Quiz Bowl,” Pho said. “I am proud of the fun atmosphere the people in the club have created, and I personally want to be able to help the club improve their Quiz Bowl skills in a friendly environment.”

In regards to the weekly practices, Cinkoske said the process of reading through “packets” of questions continues. According to Cinkoske, following the end of try-out meetings, practices will focus more on improving members’ knowledge of question structure and content rather than assessing current knowledge.
