A Maginus sunrise ray will occur on Sept. 29 at 7:54 p.m., in which a ray of light illuminates the Maginus crater in the moon’s southern highlands, according to Astronomy. Observers can view this effect during the first quarter moon using a telescope, which was showcased at Carmel High School at the CHS planetarium during their show “Big Astronomy”. Planetarium director Keith Turner said the show was focused on large telescopes, which are being built in South America.
Turner said they adapted the “Big Astronomy” show to make it suitable for their planetarium and timely for upcoming astronomical events.
“We’ll have images on the dome about the content of the show,” he said.
Turner said one of the main goals of the show is to share knowledge about, as well as to generate interest from students.
“We just started the Planetarium Club and Astronomy Club this year, so they’re getting up to speed on how everything works,” he said. “They will eventually make their own show.”
He said he is using “Big Astronomy” to help students in the planetarium club learn how he edits shows so they can create their own productions.
Planetarium Club president Akhil Jois said the members of the club are learning about the different parts of the planetarium and how they work together.
“(At) our first call-out meeting, which was a week or two ago, we actually had students work with the planetarium and actually control it themselves,” he said.
He said they will later work with the telescopes the school has and run shows, which he said was one of the main reasons he started the Planetarium Club.
“There was an astronomy club last year, but I looked at the astronomy shows and I learned that we can actually run them ourselves. So one of the biggest things I wanted to do was run an astronomy show myself,” he said. “And I realized a lot of other people were also interested in astronomy and it kind of wasn’t really prevalent in the school much.”

Jois said the “Big Astronomy” show focuses on Chilean observatories where they use lasers to perform telescoping functions.
“We have a Chilean speaker that will come in and actually run this show,” he said. “And behind the scenes, we’ll have a couple of Planetarium Club members run a couple of aspects of the planetarium. But it’s focused on these Chilean observatories and just talking about Hispanic Americans’ contributions to astronomy.”
Planetarium Club vice president Neo Dong said they hope to do monthly shows in the future, as well as more public events with the club.
“(We’ve) been talking about doing events in front of Carmel High School, like at night on weekends just looking up at the stars with telescopes,” he said.
He said he also hopes the “Big Astronomy” show will inspire the audience to become more involved in astronomy.
“I hope they foster their passion for astronomy and physics as well, because they both are really deeply intertwined. I hope through the show, they’ll come back more often and maybe get more involved with the club,” Dong said.
Jois said his favorite part of the “Big Astronomy” show is the technology it displays in the Chilean observatories.
“It’s kind of weird to think about, because you shoot a laser into the sky, and then you can use that laser to base a bunch of images. It actually gives you a lot higher resolution images,” he said. “It’s just kind of cool to me how that works. “
