First CHS planetarium show to be on Sept. 9

On Sept. 9, CHS will host its first planetarium show of the year called “Summer Stars” at 7 and 8 p.m. The running time for the two shows is 40 minutes each. Tickets are available at the CHS Bookstore from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. starting on Aug. 29 and cost $4 for adults and $2 for children, seniors and CHS students. Children 12 and under should be accompanied by an adult, and doors open 30 minutes before show time.

According to planetarium director Keith Turner, the live show will feature the sky of Carmel during the late summer night and will present a naked eye view of planets, phases of the moon and stars.

“It’s really quite beautiful when we simulate the night sky here,” Turner said. “People can see (the sky) in a way that we can’t normally see it because of the light pollution in Carmel. We have more cloudy nights than clear nights, so (this show) is ways that will hopefully insight, educate, and build enthusiasm within the general public.”

Turner said the planetarium shows, which hold about 65 people per show, usually sell out and occur once per month. To get the word out about this show, Turner said he puts information on the school district website, advertises it in the newspaper and sends emails to all the parents in the school district. “It’s primary me who runs the show,” he said. “There are astronomy club members that are learning the process how to run the planetarium, but they are not at the stage where they can do a show.”

Yanying Gao, president of the Astronomy club and sophomore, agrees that during this show, the astronomy club members will not do much. She said the astronomy club members do help out later in the year along with collecting the money and the tickets.

“People should come to the show,” Gao said, “It’s a great way to view the sky and learn a little more about what you are seeing in the sky everyday.”
