The Diversity Focus Group (DFG) is an organization with the goal to make everybody feel welcome in school, according to DFG sponsor Joseph Schaller.

According to Schaller, “Your background or anything else should not make a difference in making you feel uncomfortable in school.”

Langston Newton, DFG member and senior, said, “(We) are trying to spread diversity to CHS and educate different people about different cultures.”

DFG members recently hosted Mix-It-Up Day during lunch in the Freshman Cafeteria, where students sat with students they normally would not sit with in order to let them make new friends and learn about different cultures, Schaller said.

“I would have liked to see more people participate, but overall, it was successful,” Schaller said. “We don’t have any events coming up right now, but we will have a meeting soon to go over what we just did.”

According to Schaller, there is no official meeting schedule, but he usually contacts members through email to alert them of upcoming meetings during SRT. Club members used to meet in the conference room in the Freshman Center office, he said, but since the group has grown to 19 members, their meeting location will likely move elsewhere.

Newton said, “Last year, we had only eight or nine members, but this year, we are trying to make the group a little bigger. Most of us have been recruited by teacher or administrators, but if you want to join, just go to activities office for applications.”
