Gay-Straight Alliance to host Ally Week

The Gay-Straight Alliance (GSA) will host Ally Week in the upcoming weeks. The purpose of Ally Week is to identify, support and celebrate allies of the LGBTQ (lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and questioning) cause. The date has not yet been determined, but the club plans on having the week Oct. 22 to 29. However, the date might be pushed back because of no school on Oct. 22 as a result of fall break.

“(Ally Week) is important for (the club members) because it gives them a chance to do a little bit of outreach and raise awareness,” said Jeremy Horner, sponsor of GSA. “Last year, even just having the banners for people to sign was a big thing that got the kids really excited, but I think it’s also important that it brings awareness to the issue for everyone.”

During the last meeting, GSA came up with ideas for how they will raise awareness this year.

“We (are) thinking about giving out buttons,” said Morgan Davis, president of the GSA and senior. “Last year we made a banner to take a pledge to fight against discrimination, so we are planning on people signing that at lunch again and then just handing out candy with information and facts on it.”

According to Davis, GSA will most likely have it’s next meeting in two weeks.  At the meeting, club members will discuss whether the ideas that they come up with will actually raise awareness and not just spend money.
