The school board will meet on Oct. 28 to take action on previously proposed course changes for students. The board met on Oct. 14 to discuss the addition of these new courses. IB Computer Science, IB Business and Management, AP Capstone Program, Advanced Science, Materials Chemistry and Hebrew II were proposed to be offered next year at this school.

The AP Capstone Program is a two year program in which students will have a first year of a seminar course and a second year of a research course regarding the same subject. Carmel is one of 100 schools in the nation which has been selected to participate in the AP Capstone Program next year.

“(The AP Capstone Program) seems very exciting to give an alternative to the IB program and really give all of our students who take the AP courses another (boost) on their transcripts,” school board president Layla Spanenberg said.

Freshman Anthony Ji, who is currently enrolled in multiple AP courses, said he does not plan on taking advantage of the AP Capstone Program.

“It seems like too much work,” Ji said. “I don’t want to spend two years doing something like that.”

“The recommendations are designed to continue to provide students with the most challenging course of study,” Spanenberg said. “The proposed new courses and modifications to courses will offer a rigorous, hands-on curriculum that will engage students in critical thinking and problem solving.”
