Co-president Kevin Mi creates plans for the club’s next meeting, Monday, Sept. 15. According to Mi, the club’s goal is to play both recreationally and competitively while learning chess skills from other members.
According to AP Computer Science teacher and sponsor Margaret Winans, Chess Club will be meeting Sept. 15 in Room F104 after school. The club meets every Monday after school. This will be their third meeting; previous meetings include Aug. 25 and Sept. 8.
Regardless of experience in chess, everyone is encouraged to attend. Club members will play for both competition and recreation, and will new chess skills from other members as well.
Co-president and senior Kevin Mi promotes going to Chess Club, even if students have missed previous meetings. “Chess is very fun, we’re trying to get our third state title in a row,” he said.
The Chess Club is planning a booth for homecoming, co-president and junior Joe Philleo said, unless they cannot get enough volunteers.
Members are using club time to sharpen their skills for the state chess tournament in March. The tournament accepts competitors from schools from all Indiana.
“We’re going to work and get better and better,” Mi said.
