For its second meeting, the Economics Club will most likely hold it during the week following fall break, according to Michelle Foutz, club sponsor and economics teacher. She said she does not have detailed plans for what the members will be doing at this meeting since she does not know what kind of background they’re going to have.
According to Michael Wang, club member and sophomore, the plan that has been decided for the next meeting will be to begin working on current events.
In addition, Foutz said, “The ultimate goal (is) to go back to New York again this year. But, we’re just (going to) start going through some tests. We’re probably not going to do any oral Jeopardy practice yet, but just go through some tests to see what courses people have taken.”
In the economics competitions, there is a written part that every member of the four-member teams must take. There are two types of teams: Adam Smith, for students who have taken an AP course on economics or who have participated before in the competition, and David Ricardo, for those who have not taken an AP course.
There are also oral question rounds that go in a style similar to that of the game Jeopardy, according to Foutz. Questions for both the written and the oral portions are based on microeconomics, macroeconomics and current events.
Wang said he is currently preparing by going through AP Microeconomics material, using the textbook to study.
Foutz said she sees the club as a great opportunity for students to learn about economics and other skills. She said, “I think there are only positives if (you) are participating.”
