As the flu season approaches, the nurses in the health center are beginning to remind CHS staff and students to receive flu shots, according to nurse coordinator Kandyce Hardie. For only Carmel Clay Schools’ staff members, the school district is offering free flu shots throughout the months of October and November throughout the school district.

hey’re having at Carmel High School are Tuesday, Oct. 20 and Tuesday, Oct. 26. One’s in the morning, and one’s in the afternoon,” Hardie said. “The idea is to give staff members a chance, throughout the district, to go either in the early morning when they’re available or in the afternoon when they’re available…. So, a staff member can either go to the school where they teach at…or they can go to another school if that’s more convenient.”

While this program is only for staff members, Hardie said students should still receive flu shots soon, either from their physicians or at an alternate location.
“(Students) could go to a clinic. A lot of times…a visiting nurse service will offer clinics through doctors’ offices…and even sometimes churches in the community,” Hardie said. “I know that most of the local pharmacies offer (flu shots), also, like Meijer and Kroger and CVS and Walgreens.”
As the nurses prepare for the upcoming flu season, the nurses’ aides assist the nurses with small jobs throughout the school day. As a nurses’ aide, senior Claudia Shelbourn said her job is very calm and isn’t very demanding.
Shelbourn said, “Usually we take passes, and sometimes we help students to their classes. But we’re mostly just kind of here if the nurses…need someone to help with a few tasks.”
