Despite experiencing a lull in their normally busy schedules, the nurses in the health center are continuing to attend to ill students on a daily basis, according to nurse Rachel Lencheck.
“Every day, we see the students who come in with illness or injury and give them appropriate medication, take phone calls from parents and teachers… It’s pretty normal,” Lencheck said.
However, once the second semester begins after winter break, Lencheck said the nurses’ schedules will quickly become busy again as they will send out “action plans” for students with “high-risk” conditions—such as asthma—to teachers as students’ schedules change.
As the nurses continue with their daily, so too do the nurses’ aides, assisting the nurses with an assortment of small jobs throughout the school day. As a nurses’ aide, senior Alex Route said her job is rather laid-back and stress-free.
Route said, “As a nurses’ aid, we have free time to do our homework, but when the nurses need our help, we can jobs like fill(ing) up band-aid bags, mak(ing) icepacks, and then replenish(ing) any goods that the other people might need in the nurses office,” Route said. “But, it’s probably only once every four weeks that we actually get to do an oddball job, since it’s dispersed throughout all four periods in the day in addition to the two blocks; it’s really just once in a blue moon that we necessarily have to do anything.”
