Ayden Stewart (red) and Shawn Horrocks (blue), ComedySportz veteran members and seniors, prepare to lead younger students in an improv game. The goal of the game was to practice rhyming skills.
The ComedySportz team practiced with professional ComedySportz players in its recent rehearsals to prepare for the team’s exhibition matches in the spring. The exhibition matches serve as a venue for team members to practice their comedic improv skills on stage before competing in real ComedySportz matches.
ComedySportz sponsor Jim Peterson said the team’s main focus is preparing for the exhibition matches.
Peterson said, “Right now, we’re in the training phase, so we’ve had a couple training sessions where members of the ComedySportz adult team had come up and done training with us. That’s what we’re working toward first semester. Second semester, we’re going to have exhibition matches.”
According to Peterson, learning the required skills for performing improv at the exhibition matches is demanding for team members.
Peterson said, “(Learning improv) is not easy. It’s really kind of hard to think about all of that while you’re up there trying to make up dialogue too.”
After spending months preparing for the matches, Piper Dafforn, ComedySportz captain and senior, said she hopes attendance at the matches will be high.
Dafforn said, “Come to our matches in the spring.”
