Sponsor and math teacher, Joseph Broman, prepares to print out copies of practice tests for the upcoming AMC competition. Broman said the practice tests will prepare the members for the different style of the test.
The Math Club members was scheduled to take the fourth round of the Mandelbrot competition on Jan. 31, but due to the unforeseen snow day, this has been moved to either during SRT on Feb. 1 or after school until 4 p.m. on the same day. Math Club also continues to prepare for the American Math Competition (AMC).
Kevin Liu, co-president and senior, said, “In addition to the ongoing Mandelbrot competition, the AMC is coming up, and it’s arguably the most important Math Club event of the year.”
The top scorers on the AMC competition will qualify to take the American Invitational Mathematics Examination (AIME) in March, and AMC scores, as well as AIME scores, determine who will qualify for the United States of America Mathematical Olympiad (USAMO) in April.
Joseph Broman, club sponsor and math teacher, said, “We don’t get many qualifiers for the AIME. Last year we only had four people qualify for the USAMO and about 500 students nationwide will qualify for either of these exams.”
The AMC competition will occur right after school on Feb. 7 and Feb. 13. Students will have 75 minutes to complete the test.
