During school, Allison Shen, club president and senior, writes questions for club members to practice with during meetings. She used school computers to upload the questions she wrote for mock tests. “It’s fun to write problems because I can incorporate the names of members into the questions. Then, during the meetings they ask me how they’re finding 3.1415 bananas,” Shen said.

Math Club last met on March 4 in Room A314 and did practice math tests written by various members. Club sponsor Peter Beck said during these slower months, it is important to continue practicing writing and solving various math problems for better comprehension and competition results.

“It also helps to build team reasoning skills,” Beck said. “They not only get to understand different ways of math thinking, but they also learn how to cooperate with each other which will be an important skill to learn for the future.”

The Math Club is also hosting a celebration for Pi Day, which is on March 14.

“Sadly, the real Pi Day doesn’t fall on a meeting day,” Allison Shen, club president and senior, said. “We still like to celebrate the spirit of this iconic number.”

Shen said the club will provide pizza and pie for the club members and announcing officer results.

“Officers were voted on for the last few weeks. I’m excited to see who will be responsible for the Math Club in the future. I think that the candidates this year would all be good fits for next year. ” Shen said.

After the Pi Day party, the Math Club will participate in the annual Purple Comet competition.

“The Purple Comet is a competition we sometimes have struggles finding enough competition members for. It’s an online team competition, where each team can have up to six members,” Shen said. “It’s not until April 14, and it is free, so if anyone is interested in joining the Purple Comet competition, feel free to come by and talk to Math Club about it.”
