The school board will have a meeting on Sept. 26, and will set the school calendars for upcoming years and discuss other school policies.

According to school board president Tricia Hackett, the board will vote on the calendars for the next three school years. She said proposed calendar changes include changing fall break to a Friday and a Monday, starting school on a Wednesday and moving the teacher professional development day from the end of the semester to the beginning in order give teachers more time to plan lessons.

Hackett said, “For example, a science teacher would now have more time learn new science curriculum before the school year starts, which makes more sense.”

Not only must the school calendar meet a number of state requirements, she said, but it must also meet superintendent requirements, such as ending first semester before winter break and maximizing the number of instruction days before standardized tests.

Senior Katie Urbanowich said she thinks it’s important for the school district to re-evaluate the current calendar and plan ahead for possible cancellations. “I don’t want to be made to come back to school the day after I graduate, like they did last year,” she said.

Hackett said the board needs to take into considerations many issues when setting the calendar. “Our job as a board is to gather opinions from the informed calendar committee as well as the community, realizing that everyone sees things from different angle,” she said. “However, in the end it’s all about the educational opportunity for students.”

Additionally, the board will formally adopt school expenditure categories, which are divisions of how the district spends its money, and discuss a proposal to possibly build a cell phone tower on CHS grounds.
