Reflections on Visvim fall/winter 2014

Reflections+on+Visvim+fall%2Fwinter+2014

Viewing Visvim’s most recent collection, I was admittedly hard pressed not to blow my life savings on obscure Japanese clothing.

This Japanese streetwear brand has recently been mercilessly on point with recent fall and winter fashion trends. One needs to look no further than their most recent presentation at Mercedes Benz fashion week and compare it to what’s currently in vogue. Intentionally or not, designer Hiroki Nakamura has landed right in the center of the current fashion scene by doing what he does best: make Americana-inspired, well-crafted, meticulously-detailed clothing. Combining timeless elements, such as traditional textiles and textures (the heavy usages of flannel and wool), with novel design (take a look at the cowboy embroidery on some of the shirts) and other, more “hip” factors (the center zip on the sneakers, arm patches), it currently appears to be gaining the potential to emerge from the underground street fashion scene into a more mainstream consciousness.

Sure celebrities have been wearing Visvim for years. John Mayer frequently sports pair of their Grizzly boots and Kanye West their FBT moccasin sneaker hybrids. However, the brand’s influence has mostly been confined to the realm of footwear for many, with only clothing-conscious cosmopolitans aware of their other offerings.

With the trend of heavily textured, uniquely patterend clothing taking hold recently it should only be a matter of time before Visvim’s popularity takes off well beyond pretentious fashion forums and into widespread popularity. Just you wait, because god forbid if in two years people aren’t regularly wearing flannel ponchos and cowboy hats.
