ComedySportz inducts new members, begins practices for season

According to ComedySportz sponsor Jim Peterson, the team has added five new members to its team following a yearly audition process.

Senior Matthew Bear, junior Mary Caltrider and sophomores Chuck Burton, Jacob Greene and Blaine McBroom join six veteran members: seniors Kinsey Erickson, Matthew McDonald, Duncan Moran and Kate Urbanowski and juniors Michael Davis and Rachel Glait.

Bear said he tried out for the team after watching in previous years.

“I’ve been to a lot of matches,” he said. “It looked really fun, the kids are all high-energy, I already knew most of the people in ComedySportz and everything I’ve heard, (it’s) constantly positive, positive, positive.”

According to Bear, his audition in front of the returning ComedySportz members was altogether relaxed.

“We just did different types of improv games, which is what they do in the actual matches,” he said.” So while it’s also very fun and it’s not very serious, it gives them a very good reflection of what you would be like in an actual match.”

Peterson said that as the team starts to come together for practice, it will focus on overall improv skills.

“It’s always different all the time, but the same kind of skills apply, so we work on those skills,” he said. “My role is to reinforce what they’re teaching.”

For Bear, the season will progress one step at a time.

“There’s no set expectations,” he said. “I’m just waiting for what’s thrown at me because it’s a wild group, so I have no idea what’s going to happen.”
