For the Economics Club, regular meetings will not take place until after winter break according to Michelle Foutz, club sponsor and economics teacher. She said, “I have given (the club members) some practice quizzes. I’m just waiting right now (because) it’s hard for me to pinpoint who we’re going to use (in competition) until they know (economics).”
Foutz also said she is still deciding who the members of the David Ricardo team will be. She said, “I have some freshmen who are self-studying and have never taken (an economics) class, so they just need to spend some time on their own to learn the curriculum.”
According to sophomore Michael Wang, there are two divisions in the Indiana Economics Challenge, the economics competition that the Economics Club takes part in. The two divisions are Adam Smith and David Ricardo, in which, respectively, members can be students who have already taken an AP or IB economics course or members can be those who have not yet taken an AP or IB economics course and have not participated in the team before.
Wang said, “I am in the Adam Smith division, and so I have been reviewing a lot of the material using the (AP Microeconomics) textbook.”
In addition to this preparation, Foutz said, “(They) should keep on top of current events (related to economics) because that’s something that comes up that can separate them from the other (competing) groups.”
According to Wang, the main goal for the club as a whole is “to be national champions this year.” He said, “So we’re trying to focus on the stuff that we didn’t really do well on last year, especially the stuff that isn’t covered by the AP (Macroeconomics and Microeconomics) curriculum.”
