Makela Kaopuiki and Maggie Hettiger, student teachers for Kids’ Corner and seniors, make bulletin boards for Kids’ Corner.

The preschoolers will arrive to Kids’ Corner on March 2. With the impending arrival, Kids’ Corner members will finalize their lesson plans and work on any last-minute preparations.

Kim Lenzo, director of Kids’ Corner, said she will talk about classroom management, which deals with how to handle guidance and discipline and how to make classroom acivities run smoothly in order to prevent issues with discipline.

According to Lenzo, the Kids’ Corner members will also continue to make book props, order and put together any resources and supplies required for their lessons, and make cubby signs and circle mats for each preschooler.

During the first week of the preschool, the theme for the lesson plan is Down on the Farm.

Claire Liechty, student teacher for Kids’ Corner and senior, is one of the students in charge of the Down on the Farm theme. According to Liechty, the activities that her group planned for the students mainly deal with farm animals.

“For drama, we have farm dress-up stuff and farm animal things that (the preschoolers) can play with, and then, we’re doing farm animal sorting for math, and then, for writing, we’re doing rhyming words with different animals, and then, for snack time, we’re doing pigs in a blanket,” Liechty said.

Liechty also said the preschoolers will make several art projects for which they will use feathers, paper plates, paint and other materials.

The preschoolers will also work on a science project that emphasizes the categorization of animals that live on land and animals that live in water.

According to Liechty, the lessons plans for Down on the Farm still require some time before finalization.

Liechty said, “We’re still working on (our lessons), but we’re almost done … We have to make our samples of our projects, and then, we’re just writing out some of our lessons like our writing lesson and for the rhyming and some math.”
