Members of DECA are preparing for officer elections, which will take place from Aug. 31 to Sept. 1. All candidates for office should turn in their applications during their marketing classes from Aug. 23 to Aug. 26.

According to DECA sponsor Janice Brown, in order to run for an office, students must turn in an application and then prepare a videotaped speech. All marketing and fashion merchandising classes will view the speeches and vote.

The available officer positions are president, vice president, secretary, treasurer, chapter reporter, and class representatives.

“Any DECA member, depending upon the position they choose can run for an officer position. For example, the president must come from the Marketing Education 3-4 or Marketing seminar class. The vice president must be a junior from one of the Marketing Foundations 1-2 classes or the fashion merchandising classes. Any member can run for secretary, treasurer and the chapter reporter,” Brown said.

Brad Kremer, DECA member and senior, said he believes that it is important for DECA officers to have certain characteristics.

“The DECA officer most importantly should have a great personality. They have to be able to easily speak with people and communicate effectively,” Kremer said.

According to Brown, the elected team of officers will provide leadership for over 300 DECA members at CHS. They will also help develop, implement and guide the chapter’s program of work for the year.

Kremer said he is excited for a new year with DECA.

“I’m looking forward to state conference this year. It’s a lot of fun to see kids from all over Indiana and talk with them. I’ve been in DECA since the beginning of junior year. It’s a great activity and I encourage all sophomores to take it next year,” Kremer said.
