Kids’ Corner continues to teach preschoolers, prepares for upcoming weeks

Members of Kids’ Corner will continue to teach and prepare lessons for the weekly themes. According to Kim Lenzo, director of Kids’ Corner, the themes for the next weeks are Under the Big Top and Things That Go.

Also, according to Laura Zaletel, member of Kids’ Corner and senior, the next rotation between job placements at daycares, Edu-Care, the Carmel Clay Schools Early Childhood Preschool and different elementary buildings for members of Kids’ Corner will occur on Nov. 19.

For the current rotation at the Kids’ Corner Preschool, Emily Freyberger, member of Kids’ Corner and senior, said that every day, Kids’ Corner has a letter and a number, and every week, it has a color. According to Freyberger, on Nov. 5, the letter is “J,” and the number is 11. The color for the week of Nov. 5 is purple.

“Last time, our letter of the day was ‘F,’ our color was orange and our shape was a square, and we just go over that (and) be like, ‘Today, we’re learning about ‘F,’’ and then during Manuscript Time, we teach (the preschoolers) the correct way to (write) the capital ‘F’ and the lowercase ‘F,’ and we write it all out,” Freyberger said. “For our number, on (the) board, there is a spot that (is) like a little gumball machine, and they have these Velcro gumballs you put on it, and say the number is 11, we’d put 15 gumballs on it. Then we count out all the gumballs nice and slow, and then we call out different kids every day, who would come up and take one gumball off so we can get back to our number of 11, so it’s kind of teaching them subtraction or addition, either or, early without actually teaching it.”

However, for students at placements other than the Kids’ Corner Preschool, members of Kids’ Corner continue to assist the teacher and the students.

Zaletel, whose current placement is at Woodbrook Elementary, said, “I assist the teacher, and I help the kids if they need help with math or if they have any questions, and then I help the teacher by grading papers and handing out (the students’) homework and giving back graded work.”
