Model U.N. to attend conference at IU on Feb. 22 to 24

Model United Nations delegates will be participating in a conference at Indiana University from Feb. 22 to 24. Students will take that Friday off school and travel by school bus to IU.

“I’m really excited for it, most of the people in the club are,” Hannah Kosc, Model U.N. president and senior, said.

Unlike the conference at Vanderbilt University that the club attended last semester, this conference will include many more delegates. Kosc said this is because proximity allows for them to take a school bus rather than a charter bus and find chaperones more easily.

Students have already been assigned to the committees on which they will serve on competition day. Now, Model U.N. adviser Sandy Gardner said they are working on their position papers, which describe the stance they will take on their committees’ respective issues.

Additionally, the club is continuing with its regular Thursday meetings. The beginner and advanced groups are working together on a resolution for a constitutional crisis. In the simulation, the students represent U.S. states who want to pass a new amendment which would prevent future government shutdowns.

“We’re trying to get them together so that the beginners can learn from the advanced, and I think they’re pretty much ready,” said Gardner.
