Entering the season’s final month, debate team has big goals

Coming off a meet on Jan. 2 at Ben Davis and at Kokomo Jan. 9, the school’s debate team focuses on upcoming districts, Ivy Yan, team president and junior said. According to Yan, districts is a two-day event that will take place at Brebeuf later this month. The top two teams in each event will then go on to nationals.

“Districts is our most important meet,” Yan said.

In a meeting held last week, debate team sponsor Susan Johnson told the students “who would be going to districts and why.” Eight teams were chosen to compete at the event.

“The eight teams were chosen based on their determinations as workers,” Johnson said.

According to Johnson, four of the eight teams will compete in a public forum debate, while the other four will debate a Lincoln-Douglas style debate. Johnson said she is very confident that the students have a good chance to qualify for nationals, which will take place in the summer.

“Hopefully, we’ll at least qualify one team at districts,” Johnson said. “We have some really good debaters this year.” By Patrick Bryant <[email protected]>
