This week, the Counseling Center has set up SRT sessions for college-applying seniors to come for help with their college applications, since the most common application deadline is Nov. 1. Melinda Stephan, College and Career Programming and Resources Coordinator, is the main counselor who is running these help sessions. She said via email that she is the one who reserved the computer lab, publicized the opportunity for help, and secured counselors who will be in the lab to assist students if needed.
“I think it has been effective in that it provides students time to work in applications with counselors in the room to answer questions. The time plus the assistance is the value, I believe. The reason for these sessions is because many students asked for extra help. Due to this, we (the Counseling Center) definitely plan to start them earlier in the fall semester next year and offer more sessions,” said Stephan.
One senior who went to a session during SRT on Monday is Megan Hayes. Hayes said she went because she wanted the extra help just to sharpen her application before the common application deadline comes.
“I think that it’s a great opportunity for seniors to get another set of eyes on their applications before they have to get submitted. I went because I wanted my application to be as sharp and perfect as possible. It is nice because all of the counselors are there to help out, so you can ask many counselors to look at your application and help you,” said Hayes.
Stephan said, “The counselors are in the lab to answer any number of questions that come up. We don’t go in with any presentation or specific information to cover; instead we assist students with what they need depending on where they are in the application process.”
