Both CHS print publications Hoosier Star finalists
Sept. 1, 2010

Both Carmel High School’s 2009-10 HiLite newspaper and 2008-09 Pinnacle yearbook have been named Hoosier Star finalists in the annual competition sponsored by the Indiana High School Press Association (IHSPA).

The award is broken down by school enrollment. Both the yearbook and newspaper have qualified in Division III, which includes schools with 2,000 or more students. Other finalists in the newspaper division include Arsenal Tech, Avon, Ben Davis, Center Grove, Crown Point, Lawrence Central, Lawrence North, Noblesville and Southport. Finalists in the yearbook category include Ben Davis, Columbus North, Hamilton Southeastern, Lake Central and Noblesville.

All publications rated as either “excellent” or “superior” in the IHSPA’s annual critique service qualify as finalists for the IHSPA Hoosier Star Award, the organization’s highest honor comparable to a State championship in athletics. Since it has qualified for this distinction, the publications will be evaluated once again by a separate judge. The 2009-10 Hoosier Star winners will be announced at the IHSPA fall convention on Oct. 22. Since 2000, the HiLite has earned Hoosier Stars in 2000, 2002, 2003, 2004, 2006, 2007 and 2009. The most recent Pinnacle Hoosier Stars were for the 2007 and 2008 books.

Editors for the HiLite for 2009-10 were editor in chief Michelle Hu (now at Harvard University) and managing editors Rosemary Boeglin (Oberlin College) and Sarah Sheafer (College of Charleston). Jim Streisel is the faculty adviser for the newspaper. Editors for the 2008-09 Pinnacle were Nathaniel “Nate” Woeste (Ohio State University) and Jennifer “Jenn” Cannady (Purdue University). Carmel High School newspaper earns top rating from Quill & Scroll
Aug. 31, 2010

Quill & Scroll, the international honorary society for high school journalists, recently recognized the 2009-10 Carmel High School student newspaper with one of that organization’s highest awards. The HiLite earned an International First Place Award for superior achievement. Newspapers scoring between 900 and 1,000 total points in the evaluation earn that distinction. Carmel’s paper earned 914 points out of 1,000 and additionally earned superior achievements in four of the organization’s five individual categories – policy guidelines, coverage, display and design, and business practices

In his critique comments, the anonymous judge called the HiLite “a professional looking publication.” Additionally, he said the newspaper’s design was “among the best I’ve seen among your peer group.”

Michelle Hu (Harvard University) was last year’s editor in chief. Rosemary Boeglin (Obelin College) and Sarah Sheafer (College of Charleston) were last year’s managing editors. Jim Streisel advises the HiLite.

HiLite students earn online CSPA Gold Circle awards
March 25, 2010

Carmel High School student journalists earned individual Gold Circle Awards in nearly half of the online categories for which they were eligible from the Columbia Scholastic Press Association (CSPA). Of the 16 total “Online” awards offered in the category, Carmel students who produce design and content for the HiLite Online Web site were eligible for nine of them (the rest of the categories being for digital yearbooks, magazines and digital editions). The awards, which judge individual achievement in several different categories, were announced on the CSPA Web site after the annual CSPA convention, which concluded on March 20, 2010. According to the CSPA Web site, “Gold Circle Awards are offered to recognize superior work by student journalists usually as individuals but sometimes as an entire staff working with either print or online media.”

These awards reflect entries produced between November 1, 2008 and October 31, 2009. Because CSPA dates its awards by the year in which they are given, they are known as the 2010 Gold Circle Awards for Online Media. The winners are as follows:

First Place

  • Michelle Hu – Photo and audio sideshows for online news

Second Place

  • Rosemary Boeglin and Michelle Hu – Secondary coverage for online news
  • Michelle Hu and Emily Puterbaugh – Breaking online news

Third Place

CHS news Web site named Pacemaker finalist in annual contest sponsored by NSPA
March 11, 2010

For the second year in a row, the Carmel High School HiLite newspaper Web site, www.hilite.org, has been named a finalist in the large-school division of the annual Pacemaker competition sponsored by the National Scholastic Press Association (NSPA). On March 11, the NSPA announced 26 total finalists – 13 from schools with enrollments of 1,500 or more students and 13 from schools with enrollments of fewer than 1,500 students. The HiLite Online is the only school in Indiana to earn this recognition.

According to the NSPA Web site, Online Pacemaker entries are judged during the months of February and March by a judging team including professionals and educators with extensive online media experience, and they made their selections based on excellence in the following areas: content and coverage, site design, ease of navigation, interactivity/multimedia and writing and editing. For the first time, entries were divided into two categories based on school enrollment. The complete list of finalists can be found here.

From that list of 26 Web sites, the winners of the Pacemaker award, the highest honor the NSPA offers for publications, will be announced at the NSPA convention in Portland, OR on April 17. No further judging will take place.

The HiLite Online has performed well in previous years, earning Pacemakers in 2002, 2004 and 2009.

This year’s editors of the Web site are seniors Mike Jiang and Nishanth Samala. The editor in chief of the HiLite is senior Michelle Hu. Jim Streisel advises the HiLite.

Carmel High School newspaper Web site qualifies for Crown competition
Feb. 17, 2010

The Carmel High School student news Web site, HiLite Online, has been named a Crown Finalist by the Columbia Scholastic Press Association (CSPA). The results were announced on Feb. 17, 2010 at Columbia University in New York City.

Carmel was one of only 27 scholastic news Web sites in the country – and the only site in Indiana – to be named a finalist. Finalists are winners, not nominees. Each finalist will be revealed as either a Gold or Silver Crown at the awards ceremonies scheduled to take place during CSPA’s 86th annual Convention, on March 19, 2010 in the Roone Arledge Auditorium of the Alfred Lerner Student Center on Columbia’s Morningside Heights campus.

The full list of winners can be found at the CSPA Web site: http://cspa.columbia.edu/

This marks only the second year for the CSPA to recognize online Crown Finalists and the first year for the HiLite to earn that distinction.

The 2009-10 editorial staff consists of seniors Michelle Hu (editor in chief), Rosemary Boeglin and Sarah Sheafer (managing editors) and Mike Jiang and Nishanth Samala (Web editors).

Just last month, the 2008-09 print edition of the HiLite was also named a Crown Finalist, one of only 64 newspaper finalists from around the country and one of only four newspapers in Indiana to earn this distinction. The full article detailing that award can be found here: http://hilite.org/staff/awards

Carmel High School newspaper qualifies for Crown competition
January 4, 2010

Once again, the Carmel High School HiLite newspaper has been named a Crown Finalist by the Columbia Scholastic Press Association. The award is based on the 2008-09 newspaper. Finalist status guarantees that the HiLite will earn either a Silver Crown or Gold Crown, the CSPA’s two highest awards, at the organization’s convention in March.

The HiLite is one of only 64 newspaper finalists from around the country and one of only four newspapers in Indiana to earn this distinction. In its annual critique received earlier this year, the paper earned Gold Medalist status, a preliminary distinction that is separate from the Crown competition. The 2008-09 HiLite newspaper earned All-Columbian honors in each of four categories in that critique – coverage, writing and editing, graphic presentation and business operations. Additionally, the anonymous judge awarded the paper a total of 972 points out of 1,000, which qualified it for the Gold Medalist designation.

Last year, the 2007-08 paper also received a Gold Medalist rating and went on in the spring to earn the CSPA’s highest award, the Gold Crown, one of only 19 scholastic newspapers in the country to earn that distinction. This year’s score was a nine-point improvement from the assessment of the 2007-08 publication, and while the critique rating is separate from the Crown judging, traditionally the HiLite has performed well in the Crown competition, earning additional Gold Crowns in 1995, 1999, 2005 and 2009 and Silver Crowns in 1994, 2004, 2006 and 2007.

The judge noted that the paper was “an example of how broadsheet should look” and that it displayed a “very effective design that mixes traditional with the modern.

This year, the HiLite has switched to a tabloid newsmagazine format in order to follow changes in the newspaper industry. The emphasis for the paper is now on lengthier, in-depth stories. The HiLite Web site, HiLite Online, is now the primary outlet for breaking news and upcoming events.

As for the transition, the judge said it brings the HiLite to the “cutting edge.

The 2008-09 editor in chief was Amy Flis ‘09, now at Duke University. The managing editors were Cathy Chen ‘09 (Dartmouth College) and Brittani Wheeler’09 (Indiana University).

Oct. 27, 2009

Both of Carmel High School’s print publications, the HiLite newspaper and Pinnacle yearbook, earned Hoosier Star awards in the large-school division at the Indiana High School Press Association (IHSPA) convention at Franklin College Oct. 22-23. HiLite staffers earn individual awards from NSPA
Sept. 11, 2009

Three members of the Carmel High School HiLite newspaper staff earned recognition from the National Scholastic Press Association (NSPA) in that organization’s annual contest to award individual achievement.

Senior Rebecca Xu was one of only five finalists in the Editorial Cartoon of the Year competition while junior Lauren Burdick and senior Michelle Hu teamed up to be one of three finalists in the Story of the Year multimedia category. All work was from the 2008-09 school year.

Xu’s editorial cartoon, titled “The Next Step,” coincided with the 2008 Presidential election and depicted a montage of images from Abraham Lincoln to Martin Luther King, Jr. to Barack Obama. To see her cartoon on the HiLite Web site, click here: http://hilite.org/archives/2230. To see her work, along with the work of the other finalists, go to the NSPA’s Web site: http://studentpress.org/nspa/winners/cartoon09.html.

Last year, the 2007-08 paper also received a Gold Medalist rating and went on in the spring to earn the CSPA’s highest award, the Gold Crown, one of only 19 scholastic newspapers in the country to earn that distinction. This year’s score was a nine-point improvement from the assessment of the 2007-08 publication, and while the critique rating is separate from the Crown judging, traditionally the HiLite has performed well in the Crown competition, earning additional Gold Crowns in 1995, 1999 and 2005 and Silver Crowns in 1994, 2004, 2006 and 2007.

HiLite Online awarded NSPA All-American rating
July 29, 2009

Annually, the National Scholastic Press Association (NSPA) invites school publications to submit Web sites for critique. Sites are judged not only on their ease of use, but also substance. Judges seek out innovative ways to convey the story to viewers in the school and community. Additionally, judges read through stories for balanced coverage and multiple sources to ensure the fairness of journalism.

This year, the HiLite‘s site, HiLite Online, received the highest rating from the NSPA. Out of a total of 4,000 points, the site was awarded 3,425 and four Marks of Distinction, qualifying for the All-American rating. Categories included coverage/content (the ability of the site to report on a myriad of topics and the accuracy of the stories), interactivity/community (the opportunities and accesibility offered to viewers for expressing their opinions), breaking news (the frequency and speed at which the site updates its stories), design/navigation (the aesthetics and ease of use on the site) and rich media (the utilization of different forms of media, such as photos and videos).

The judge said, “It is nice to see some expanded coverage with stories. I really liked seeing the video to accompany the April 2 “Fame in the Internet Age” story by Celina Wu. That is just the kind of thing that media sites should be using video for. I love being able to see and hear a band play instead of just reading a story. The video helps put the puzzle together for me in a way the story alone can’t.”

Additionally, the site earned 100 of 100 points in student work credit.

The 2008-09 editor-in-chief of the HiLite newspaper was Amy Flis, who will attend Duke University in the fall. The managing editors were Brittani Wheeler and Cathy Chen, who will attend Indiana University and Dartmouth College, respectively. The editor of the Web site was Yon-Sue Choi, who will attend Dartmouth College.

Newspaper earns superior rating, qualifies for Hoosier Star Award
May 12, 2009

Carmel High School’s 2008-09 HiLite newspaper has earned a “superior” overall rating from the Indiana High School Press Association. Based on issues published from August 2008 until January 2009, it is the first award for the current print newspaper staff; other organizations like the Columbia Scholastic Press Association, Quill & Scroll and the National Scholastic Press Association will not release their lists of 2008-09 winners until next school year.

Additionally, Carmel earned “superior” ratings in 10 of the 13 total individual categories, earning additional “special distinction” in two of those areas: Overall content and coverage and art.

In the comments annotated throughout the 16-page critique book, the judge wrote, “I thoroughly enjoyed visiting the hallways and fields of your school through the HiLite. It is clear that you have an effective system from story idea compilation to completion. Keep up the good work…Celebrate in your successes and continue in your awesome responsibility.”

All newspapers rated as either “excellent” or “superior” qualify as finalists for the IHSPA Hoosier Star Award, the organization’s highest honor comparable to a State championship in athletics. Since it has qualified for this distinction, the 2008-09 HiLite will be evaluated once again by a separate judge. The 2008-09 Hoosier Star winners will be announced at the IHSPA fall convention on Oct. 23. Since 2000, the HiLite has earned Hoosier Stars in 2000, 2002, 2003, 2004, 2006 and 2007.

Entries must have been published between March 1, 2008 and Feb. 28, 2009. According to its Web site, the WPCI “inspires students to do their best work, which earns them recognition and reflects well on their teachers (and) advisers.”

Hodgin’s award was for her 15 Minutes of Fame feature page titled “The Amazing Comic World of Kevin Anderson” that detailed the work of a student cartoonist. Of the design, the anonymous judge said, “This is a very clean layout that uses a sequence of sketches and photo illustrations to add another dimension to the story. The use of typography and color helps bring the page to life.”
