With summer slowly making its way back, many musicians have planned to release their albums during this time frame. From Ed Sheeran to Linkin Park, many types of new music will be available to listeners of all genres. Coldplay was the first to release an upcoming album in the summer lineup; the band recently released its sixth album, titled “Ghost Stories” on May 19.
The band released “Magic” as the first teaser single on March 3 of this year. Immediately, fans noticed a distinct difference between this song and the songs that were written for “Viva la Vida or Death and All His Friends” and “Mylo Xyloto,” Coldplay’s two most recent albums. “Magic” instead lends itself to a more alternative style rather than the more energized flow that the previous two albums brought with them. With the band’s slight production additions such as lingering guitar reverb, fans can immediately recognize the original style of Coldplay.
The second teaser single, “Midnight,” is similar to “Magic” in terms of its alternative style lyrics, but instead includes an electro track composed by British musician Jon Hopkins, thus giving it more of a pop style overall. This song, released April 19, maintains simple chords along with the voice of leader singer Chris Martin. However, the song picks up and introduces a new beat that suggests more of an indie theme. It offers a more dramatic feel, but still maintains a definite pop vibe with its pulsating beat and piano. This song seems to represent Coldplay’s stake at perhaps a new style of music. Despite that, it seems to leave fans only craving more of the album.
On May 2, the prayers of Coldplay fans were heard as they were treated to another single release from the album, this one being titled “A Sky Full of Stars.” Immediately, listeners will notice the strong piano introduction that turns piano loop and will know what to expect from what seems to be the most energized song of the three released. It also seems to be the most similar song when compared to “Mylo Xyloto,” Coldplay’s most recently album. With its more dance evoking rhythm, “A Sky Full of Stars” seems to be almost miles away from the previously released singles and the entire Coldplay style, a fact that will indeed keep listeners keen for more releases or the album as a whole.
Based on the three teaser singles and the entire album itself, Coldplay seems to be both sticking with its roots and exploring new horizons at the same time.
Coldplay is just one of the many bands that released albums this summer. Regardless of taste, from screamo to alternative, fans of every genre will find an album to suit their preference.
