Although the Colts lost the first two games of the 2014 season, that did not faze them as they defeated the Jacksonville Jaguars 44-17 while on road for their first win of the season. The Colts executed their game plan perfectly and the game strengthened the fact that the Colts are Super Bowl contenders.
Quarterback Andrew Luck had one of the best games in his career against Jacksonville. He went 31-39 and also threw for 370 yards, four touchdowns and no interceptions. Luck was patient throughout the entire game and did not force the ball to his receivers. In addition, Luck maximized his arsenal against Jacksonville. While he has proven weapons such as receivers Reggie Wayne and TY Hilton, he utilized his lesser-known options such as running back Ahmad Bradshaw, tight end Dwayne Allen and wide receiver Donte Moncrief. Bradshaw showed that he is a versatile player as he can be a weapon as a running back or a receiver. Allen showed that he is one of the most overlooked players on this Colts squad and should cause trouble for teams, especially in the redzone. With Luck and his plethora of receivers, the Colts aerial attack might be the third best in the league behind the Denver Broncos and the San Diego Chargers.
While the offensive line of the Colts have been poor in recent history, they looked phenomenal against Jacksonville. Pretty much for the first time in his NFL career, Luck was given an ample amount of time to throw the ball and did not have to worry about the pass rush and he can thank the offensive line for that. The offensive line helped Bradshaw and fellow running back Trent Richardson as they combined for 112 rushing yards. Granted though that the Jags pass rush was week but if the Colts offensive line plays as well as they did for the rest of the season, that can not only keep defenses honest but also provide Luck enough time to find his receivers.
While the Colts struggled to get to the quarterback in the first two games, they succeeded against Jacksonville. In the first half, the Colts pass rush got to Jaguars quarterback Chad Henne many times and stalled his attempts to drive the ball down. While Blake Bortles, Jaguars’ quarterback and the third overall pick in the 2014 NFL Draft, fared better in his NFL debut as he threw for two touchdowns, he threw two interceptions since Colts cornerbacks, Vontae Davis and Greg Toler, taking advantage of Bortles’s inexperience.
While the Colts demolished a weak Jaguars team in Week 3, this game indicated the amount of damage that the Colts can do if everything runs like a well-oiled machine.
