Honolulu. Capital of Hawaii, a civilization living in paradise, birthplace of crime scenes. If you’ve lived near the high school of Honolulu Punahou, you may have heard talk all year about their national record, specifically, the Honolulu Punahou boys swimming team which, from 1958 to 1986; won 29 consecutive State Championships. It was a record which, like Joe DiMaggio’s 56 game hitting streak, many people thought would never be broken. Since that time, several schools have tried, some have even come close, but no one has broken the streak. No one, that is…until Saturday.
I don’t know what’s more surprising, that Carmel broke the national record or that their streak started the year Honolulu won its last state title. But, seriously. 30 consecutive state championships by the girls swim team. Ladies and gentlemen, I present to you the next idea for the Bicentennial Indiana State Flag.
So, what’s the next step for the girl’s swim team? Right now, they should bask in the glory of the national record. But, that’s not enough for the team. And I know they will continue to look for the next state championship. So, how far will they go? Will they make it to 31? Will they make it to 40? Will their streak end here? Only fate will tell us.
But for now, it’s time to celebrate. Speaking of, it’s time for me to play “Centuries” and other celebratory music. Catch you all next week.
