Shriver was the sister of former President John F. Kennedy, former senator Robert F. Kennedy and current senator Edward Kennedy. She was known for founding the Special Olympics, having been inspired by the ordeals her sister Rosemary endured, who had mental disabilities.
She was also the mother of Maria Shriver, wife of California’s governor Arnold Schwarzenegger. Both were in Massachusetts the past few days in order to watch over Shriver.
President Reagan awarded her the Presidential Medal of Freedom for her efforts in 1984 for her efforts.
