Alright, well, it’s been a while since I’ve blogged. Part of it’s because I’ve been busy, but mostly because I’ve been lazy. Every time I have time to write a blog, I’m like, “Meh, I’ll go nap instead.” But now that all my assignments for HiLite are
finished and there’s not really any proofreading to be done, it’s blog time. I guess I think my life isn’t interesting enough to write and read about, but I still feel like I have to keep this up for you readers. Pretty much Holiday Spec is taking over my life, so even though I’ve written about choir before, here’s my perspective now, two months later.
I’m in Encores, an all girl choir, and our own number is “Mele Kalikimaka” (major props to me for spelling that right on the first try). But anyways, it’s basically a Hawaiian Christmas song, and it’s pretty fun. Except for as of last rehearsal we don’t have a working track. And some people still can’t do pivot turns, which is a personal pet peeve since I’m the dance captain. But for the most part, everyone seems to be having fun on stage which is the most important thing because if you’re having fun, the audience will probably have fun too.
Our other songs are combined numbers, including the six songs everyone sings together at the end. With everyone on stage. It seems to defy physics that we can fit the entire department on stage, like everyone is magically squished to take up less space. Good news is I’m in the front row; bad news, I have to walk down from the top riser to get there. So, let’s hope I don’t trip and fall while everyone else stampedes over me. It’ll be like Mufasa’s death, except with character shoes and singing.
So far it may seem like I’m dreading Spec, but to be honest I really just don’t know what to expect so I’m excited but I don’t know what I’m excited for. If that makes sense. We’re so lucky here at Carmel to be able to put on a show like this. So much work goes into it that I never even realized. Not only have the choir members spent months rehearsing in class and extra rehearsals, but the directors have been planning for this and figuring everything out. And the tech people. Oh my gosh. Like seriously they’ve done so much lighting and sound and staging stuff it’s crazy. And of course, parents who have helped with the thousands of costumes. And I know I exaggerate sometimes, but thousands of costumes is no exaggeration. So it’s great, but at the same time it’s a hot mess. We’ll have at least one dress rehearsal before opening night, but it might be a disaster. You know what they say, though, “Bad dress, good show.”
I hope all of you get to experience Spec in some way this year. Whether you’re in choir, or on tech crew, or just a fabulous audience member, it’s definitely worth it. Plus there’s a song that the audience wears 3D glasses for. Spoilers. So if you want to come, shows are Wednesday-Saturday at 7:30, plus Saturday at 2:30. Tickets are available in the bookstore and online while they last. Yayyy Spec.
Until next time,
Olivia
