It was bad.
In fact, it was terrible.
The Colts were dominated on all sides of the ball and as a result, lost 38-8 to the NFC West bottom feeding St. Louis Rams. The Rams were led by a backup quarterback, yet racked up 372 yards against a Colts defense that looked tired, unprepared, and out of place. Andrew Luck was hit on almost every down, forced passes, and doubled the amount of interceptions on the season.
But don’t panic, if there ever is such thing as a perfect week to lose, it would be this one.
The Tennessee Titans, who are the Colts’ biggest rival for the AFC South crown, also lost (to the previously winless Jacksonville Jaguars). So even with the debacle against the Rams, we still have a solid two game lead in the division. Better yet, the Bengals, whom the Colts’ are competing for a playoff bye, also lost their game to the Baltimore Ravens. And due to the complicated tie-breaking rules of the NFL, the Colts’ actually surpassed them in the standings and sit in 3rd place of the AFC. The other team contending for the playoff bye, the New England Patriots, had a bye week. So the Colts actually didn’t lose ground to anyone. Yes, it would have been a chance to pull ahead, but considering how atrociously we played on Sunday, we’re just lucky to not have lost any ground.
We also play the Tennessee Titans this Thursday night. The short week allows our players to quickly move past last week and prepare for our next opponent. It doesn’t give any time for the team to dwell on the loss. The Titans also lost their starting quarterback Jake Locker for the season, so the Colts have another advantage heading into this week’s matchup.
Forget about the loss to the Rams, it was one bad week. Many teams would love to be in the position that the Colts are in right now. With a 6-3 record, we’re still one of the best teams in the NFL. Get a win on Thursday and the Colts will stretch their divisional advantage to three games, and once again solidify themselves as a legit AFC contender.
