K-8 Mentoring sponsor Robin Pletcher and mentor Nathanael “Nate” Thompson discuss activities for kids at the elementary and middle schools. Next year’s K-8 Mentors have already been selected.
Next year’s K-8 Mentors have been selected according sponsor Robin Pletcher. This year, there are 26 mentors, with three being juniors and 23 being seniors. “Because (K-8 Mentoring) is a special class, typically seniors do it.”
The criteria for being a mentor include being responsible, reliable, strong academic scores and strong attendance. Additionally, it was important for the mentor to have a driver’s license in order to drive to and from the schools. According to sponsor Nathanael “Nate” Thompson, prior experience is also recommended. “I had mentored before at Brookside Church so I guess that helped my case a little bit, just mentoring in the past.” While at Brookside Church, Thompson mainly tutored middle school kids after school. When applying his past mentoring knowledge to K-8 Mentoring, Thompson says that he now takes his kids to the gym and plays games with them.
“When you get (the kids) doing something, they talk a lot more, so we just talk about what’s going on life. It’s good to be able to talk to them.”
