According to Caren Rickett, club sponsor and Latin teacher the club will meet Nov. 10 to prepare for the final meeting in late April. According to Rickett, normally the club meets in A231 until the late bus, where late bus passes will then be provided.
According to Katie Schmelz, senior and club member, at their last meeting, Oct. 27, the club did logistic work including picking out a fundraiser, coming up with service project ideas and making paper doll cutouts and paper helmets.
According to Schmelz, each meeting follows a similar schedule: talk about the syllabus, conduct activities, eat food and then plan for the next meeting. “You don’t have to be in a Latin class to be in the club. That’s a common misconception,” she said.
According to Rickett, club members are preparing for the Indiana Junior Classical League (IJCL) event.
“We are gearing up for the Fall Latin Day in mid-November. We have six members who will travel to Purdue University for a daylong event to mix with other Latin groups in Indiana as well as get a taste of what IJCL is. We are also trying to organize a small play to perform for elementary school kids sometime later this year,” Schmelz said.
“My favorite part (of the club) is the people. I get to meet so many different people and get the chance to experience so many different things. I used to be kind of shy but since I’ve become a part of the Latin club, I have branched out. I can now speak in front of 200 kids and present ideas to adults, something I had a difficult time doing in the past,” Schmelz said. By Grace Zhang
