This Saturday, the marching will participate in the Indiana State School Music Association (ISSMA) regional championships. Senior Scott Williamson, who has played baritone in the marching band for two years, said that the band is diligently preparing for the competition. “We’re doing what we always do—practicing before and after school, working on fundamentals and perfecting the details of the show,” Williamson said.
Michael Pote, associate director of bands, said the band does not know where it is at competitively compared with other schools since the group has yet to compete at the state circuit.
“Everyone is working hard right now. (We’re) trying to get as good as we can,” Pote said. “We don’t stress competition. We don’t even think of competition. We just stress being as good as we can.”
According to Pote, the theme for marching band this year is boundaries. The show, featuring original music by Richard Saucedo, tries to create different ways to portray the concept of breaking through boundaries on the field.
Williamson said that learning the routine is an ongoing process and that more details will be added to the show as the year goes on. “I think we’re still learning, but hopefully we’ll be able to putt it off,” he said. “I’m excited to see what we can do. I think we have a lot of potential.”
