Greyhound Connections is preparing for a year of helping new students at Carmel High School. According to Victoria “Tori” Doss, co-president of Greyhound Connections and senior, the club is an organization that welcomes not only incoming freshmen, but also transfer students.
“GKOM focuses on helping freshmen adjust to the school, but many of the new students that aren’t freshmen get lost in the mix,” Doss said. “And honestly, it’s even harder for them since they’re one of the only new students in their class.”
One way the club integrates with the new students is one-on-one interaction. According to Doss, each member is paired with a new student and personally helps him or her through questions and concerns. This way, she said, it’s more personal and transfer students will feel less nervous and shy.
Eric Wiegand, Greyhound Connections member and junior, said he feels the club is effective in its mission.
He said, “I think our message gets across pretty clearly. New students feel they have someone to talk to and the first month is a little easier for them.”
