The transportation department continues to hire bus drivers due to the bus driver shortage faced earlier this year, according to Ron Farrand, director of facilities and transportation. Farrand said that although the increase in advertising open positions and hiring in the last few months has lessened the shortage, the department is still looking for more people.
“The shortage is not as great now as it was, but we still look to hire,” Farrand said.
Farrand also said the department continues to encourage students to ride the bus as opposed to driving themselves in winter weather, as the bus is the safer alternative.
“The facts are all on our website for anyone to read,” he said. “It is a better idea to take the bus as our drivers have more experience than students, and the overall bus design is safer.”
Despite these facts, senior Alan Pomeranke still chooses to drive everyday as it is much more convenient for him.
“I can choose my own times when I drive,” Pomeranke said. “I also can spend less time on the road, and more time either at home or at school.”
