According to Senate sponsor Michelle Foutz, most senators are currently preparing for their reelection for the 2013-14 school year.
“(Senate is) working on elections, coordinating the elections right now, (and) going over to the middle schools and trying to help them with the middle school Senate elections, which are taking place in the spring, because (the middle schools) go through elections to help bring in two senators from each middle school for the freshman year,” she said.
Sophomore Ruth Zhong is supporting sophomore Evelyn Shan’s bid for a Senate office next year.
Zhong said, “I support her because I’ve known her for a long time, and she’s a hardworking student and friend.”
In addition, the annual Senate-sponsored spring blood drive will occur on May 3. According to Foutz, it will be similar to the one that occurs each fall. Senators have also been helping Foutz give hall passes to students, send letters to parents and film a promotional video for WTHR, a local TV station.
“I think (the promotional video is) going to be on TV—just the value of the high school drive and how important it is to the blood supply in the local community and the hospitals in this area,” Foutz said. “We have two senators who are going to be interviewed for that: (senior) Charlie Walker and (junior) Jessica Chiang).”
The election for student body president recently concluded, with George Gemelas, three-year senator and junior, emerging as the winner.
“The only thing that disappointed me a little bit (about the student body president elections) was the voting turnout was a little bit low,” Foutz said.
Even though Gemelas’ running mate, Jessica Chiang, three-year senator and junior, lost the election, Foutz said she will still need Chiang to help lead the Senate.
Foutz said, “I rely a lot on the senior senators to help too, besides leadership from the president.”
