Carmel-La Salle Match Report
The Carmel Greyhounds traveled to the University of Cincinnati’s Nippert Stadium to play the La Salle High School Lancers. La Salle is an all boys school and was ranked 13th preseason.
La Salle immediately showed their dominance as soon as they got the ball on a punt, returning it all the way for a touchdown to put them up 7-0. In fact, La Salle got up 27-0 before Carmel began to come back.
And Carmel came back and almost swung the momentum their way. Ethan Merriweather, wide receiver and junior, caught a great pass and put 6 points on the board. Nick Stacy added the extra point to make it 27-7 before the half ended.
Even though La Salle absolutely trounced the Greyhounds in the first half, it became blatantly obvious in the second half that La Salle had almost exhausted themselves getting those 27 points. Safety and senior Alex Akins caused a fumble, scooped up the loose ball, and then returned it all the way to the La Salle 1-yard line. The only reason Akins didn’t score is because a La Salle player made a desperate lunge and got the tackle. The Offense scored on the next play with a 1-yard run for the touchdown.
And that was not all. Michael Viktrup scored one more touchdown to make the score 27-21 before La Salle realized the battle was not over and began to fight back. By now, La Salle’s student section was quiet, prompting senior Teddy Browning and his crew to chant “Why so quiet?” over and over again.
But La Salle had a few tricks up their sleeve. They promptly brought in the “Crazy Kid in the Basketball Jersey” and deployed 2 extra cheerleaders to rile up the adult fans. Shortly after Browning and his crew chanted “Why so quiet?”, La Salle scored to make it 35-21.
Although Michael Viktrup scored 1 more touchdown to make it 35-28, Carmel lost the game. Despite this, Head Coach John Hebert was extremely proud of his players.
“I’m extremely proud of you guys,” Hebert said to the team after the game. “You showcased the talent Indiana has and I’m proud of this. We’ll take this and learn from our mistakes and go get ready to play Center Grove.”
Via a Remind101 text, Hebert also said “Observation from tonight: They [La Salle] were cramping a lot, and we weren’t. We were hydrated.” The match against La Salle was hot and humid, and it is expected to be hot and humid against Center Grove.
Michael Viktrup was named Carmel’s Most Valuable Player.
