Sophomore Jason Wing, Vietnam

“While in Vietnam, I got typhoid. My parents think it was the infected food. When I was there, I had diarrhea and I couldn’t eat, and I had to go to the restroom right away and it was really annoying. After two weeks, it got better but when I went back home, it came back and I started getting a really high fever in the 105 (degree) range. I started getting headaches and hot flashes and I couldn’t sleep. It ruined the first half of my trip. I also received a really high level of enzymes in my blood and got pancreatitis and had to fast for a week.”

Junior Rohan Dharan, Australia

“This Christmas, me and my family were supposed to go to Australia. We were at the airport and we cleared security and we were getting ready to clear immigrations. My brother decided to slide down the stairs and broke his arm. We had to rush to the hospital and back. We didn’t think we’d make our flight, but we did.”

Jennifer Ott, AP European and World History teacher, New York, NY

“My family and I were traveling to New York City, and we were on the runway and our flight got stopped because one of the engines had caught on fire. We did a lot of waiting at the airport. We waited all day and slept part of the night in the airport and then we got back on the same plane that they had fixed and flew to our connecting city. Obviously we missed the connection, so we had to sleep at the airport there, and then the next day they got us on a flight home.  That was pretty miserable and a little unnerving that they put us back on a plane that had a mechanical failure.”

Junior Allie Weller, Paris, France

“When I went (to Paris), we tried to take the metro back to where we were going to meet (the rest of the tour group). When we were on the metro, the train in front of us caught on fire. We had to get off the metro and walk to the (meeting place).  Since there was a fire, we couldn’t get on the train line. We walked for about an hour and got lost a couple of times.”

Senior Elliott Chen, Vatican City, Italy

“After my freshman year, my eighth grade teacher picked a bunch of former students to go to Europe with him for a month. The first real bad thing that happened was in Vatican City. I’m pretty sure I got pick pocketed in the Vatican so I didn’t have any money for the rest of the trip, and that was like two weeks in. I still had two weeks to go, and I was pretty much flat broke. Then on the flight to France for the last week, my luggage got misplaced, so I didn’t have any luggage with me while we were in France the entire time. So I was stuck with like the same two T-shirts and the same pair of shorts for a week. I had to hand-wash all my clothes. It didn’t ruin (my trip), because I still had a bunch of fun and that’s just memories that I’ll remember forever.”

Junior Fatimah Hameed, Chicago, IL

“One of the worst ones was on our way to Chicago, we were driving on the highway and it was raining really hard, so our windshield wipers were on and just out of nowhere, we see this big flash of yellow and it turns into red. Because this bright yellow bird flew into our windshield and got caught in the wipers. The wipers kept going and it spread blood and guts on our windshield over and over. It was disgusting and we couldn’t see anything.”
