Loren Bouchard’s “Bob’s Burgers” has garnered itself a cult following during its 13 years on air, and rightfully so. The hit-show features the Belcher family of five, Bob, Linda, Tina, Gene, and Louise and their struggling burger restaurant, with all the episodes very grounded in its setting and cast of characters. The show recently released its 15th season, with new episodes still continuing to release.
There are many reasons why “Bob’s Burgers” is considered to be such a well-written and adored show. It distinguishes itself apart from the rest of the adult animation genre, and created something entirely new, rendering it distinctly unique. The show does this through its reliance on wholesome humor and the heartwarming relationships between its characters, very different from the rest of the adult swim landscape that typically utilizes shock humor that often puts down some group of people for the sake of its comedic appeal. “Bob’s Burgers” simply doesn’t have a need for that, its witty and engaging jokes speak for themselves.
The quirks of the cast of characters and exploration of real-world issues in an extremely clever and empathetic manner has made it a comfort show for millions of people who can’t get enough of it. This is evident through its abundance of seasons, despite how old the show has gotten.
Season 15 recently made its premiere, with a whole new collection of amusing episodes for its viewers to enjoy. Season 15 is exactly what you’d expect it to be compared to the rest of the more recent seasons. “Bob’s Burgers” is a show of consistent quality, there was never one season when everything got extremely worse, like many long-running television series tend to do.
However, to be completely honest, season 15 certainly doesn’t carry any top-tier episodes. The initial seasons, especially one and two, carry more edgy and simplistic jokes. As the series progressed, “Bob’s Burgers” started to gravitate toward more family-friendly humor and detailed plotlines, this is likely due to the fact that in order to create so many episodes, the content of the series naturally becomes more specific, or changes in some type of way, finding its voice and audience.
In my personal opinion, the early seasons were more enjoyable to watch. There’s a barrier between too simple and overly-complicated, and I feel that seasons 2-6 balanced that perfectly. So far, the premise of many of the episodes of season 15 have been good, however the execution of them slightly lacked, they weren’t as clever and innately humorous as I craved for them to be. I definitely believe that it was worth the watch, but this season pales in comparison to its older counterparts.
All in all, “Bob’s Burgers” is truly an anomaly in the world of modern television, and deserves all the praise based on how amazingly the writers were able to execute it, every episode is expertly crafted and extremely comforting. That said, if you want to watch the show, I strongly advise starting with the early seasons.
