Now that the school year has begun, the National Honor Society (NHS) has started its yearly events. According to Lauren Boughner, NHS member and senior, it’s going to be one of the best years the NHS has ever seen.
“It (NHS) is a group of seniors who have gotten a certain grade point average. Juniors are sent letters to apply for membership. You need to have two examples to volunteering to get in and they also consider leadership positions and extracurriculars you have. I believe this year’s NHS consists of about 250 to 300 people,” Boughner said.
“Carmel High juniors who have earned a 3.7 grade point average at the end of the first semester of their 11th grade year are eligible to apply for NHS membership. Application information is sent to potential members in February,” NHS head sponsor Michele Satchwell said.
A new year also means new officers for NHS. This year’s president is George Armstrong, the vice president is Rushvi Desai, the secretary is Abinand Rejimon and the treasurer is Daniel Berman.
“The NHS is off to a great start this year, mostly because the members elected great officers. NHS members helped at Open House, created the new locker signs, volunteered their time and expertise on a number of community service projects over the summer, and have already helped out at several community events this year,” Satchwell said.
