Jewish Student Unions (JSU) around the city are planning to have a Hanukkah Party on Dec. 1, but the location of this party still remains unknown. They invited all Indianapolis area high schools to take part in this event.
Brett Gerstein, co-president of JSU at CHS and senior, was Carmel’s representative to the citywide meeting in Indianapolis. She was one of the members who supported the idea of having a party. “We kind of got this idea from examples from previous years, but decided that it had to be done differently to be a huge success,” Gerstein said.
One of the problems faced by the JSUs around the city is how to get people to go to party. Sponsor Shelly Rubinstein has been the head of this event in years prior. “In past years we have had maybe 50 kids show up. The main thing this year is to sponsor the event and advertise it through other kids,” Rubinstein said.
Gerstein said the JSU committee had many things planned for Hanukkah, including a Havdallah celebration, Jewish games such as Dreidel and an olive oil candle demonstration. Carmel also plans to have its own Hanukkah on and undecided date.
Other things that JSU has planned are to adopt a family for the holiday season and to wrap gifts for families on Dec. 2.
“I love doing what I do because it makes me feel unique and I can show off my culture,” Gerstein said.
