According to Assistant Principal Doug Bird, when students and teachers go on winter break, the maintenance and custodial departments will be hard at work on preparing the buildings and grounds for next semester.
Bird said, “(Winter break) is a great opportunity to really do some bigger maintenance things, such as touch up the floors.”
Bird said the maintenance department will be putting down a fresh layer of wax on the hard floors throughout the school. The coating makes the floors shiny, but also serves as a protective coating against the salt and water on shoes in the winter. This process is done twice a year, once during winter break and once during summer break.
Also, both departments are planning to make repairs to classrooms that can not be done during school hours, according to Bird.
“(The repairs) really just depend on what has come up over time. It would really only be stuff that would get in the way of instruction going on that might render the classroom not useable at that time,” Bird said.
Students here said they are appreciative of what the departments do to maintain the buildings and grounds of the school.
Junior Rachel Krieger said, “I’m really grateful for the staff for coming in, while we are off all having fun, and actually doing work. I hope that once they wax the floors, we’ll be able to slide on them and they’ll be really slippery.”
