Elaina Xiong, senior and speech team leader, met with speech team sponsors Anna Kaiser and Jacleen Joiner on Sept. 5 to plan the callout meeting, currently scheduled for Sept. 18.

Kaiser said at the callout, former speech team members will provide a walkthrough of a typical competition, information about the categorical competition types and important documents for the club.

“We have people doing a variety of events, so we will just show them what speech team is about and (examples of) the different events that we do,” Xiong said. “We target different kinds of people. For example, actors may be interested because there are a lot of acting events at speech (competitions).”

“I didn’t realize at first that there were so many different categories (at speech competitions), so I think giving an example is a great idea.” Kaiser said. Kaiser and Joiner are both new teachers, and according to Kaiser, new to speech team.

Last year speech team met once for the call out and another time to make posters, but this year Kaiser said she wants the team to meet every month. Joiner said, “We want this to be the kind of club they enjoy coming to.”

“I think, because Carmel is so big, they’re looking for a place where they can belong. I want to make speech team that type of club where we just enjoy meeting and have fun,” Kaiser said.

Speech team leaders and sponsors plan to meet again Sept. 10 to plan the callout in more detail and create flyers to distribute around the school, to cafeterias and drama rooms.
