Jazz Ensemble is holding auditions in the band room on Sept. 23 and 25, and all people auditioning will play “Peri’s Scope” by Bill Evans, according to Mike Pote, the director of Jazz Ensemble.
“Everybody auditions, one big room full of people auditioning, and then we post results about three days later,” he said. “It’s very popular here. We’re one of the very few programs in the entire country that have four, full jazz ensembles.”
Each jazz ensemble is usually 18-25 people consisting of saxophone, trombone, trumpet, piano, and bass players who are put into different jazz ensembles based on experience and ability, according to Pote. Jazz Band meets every day at 7:00 a.m., and the people who are in Jazz Band will receive one academic credit for the class.
Senior David Phebus, a trumpet player who has participated in Jazz Ensemble since he was a freshman, said that he prepares music by listening to professional recordings, and he participates in Jazz Ensemble because of his love for jazz, and, “it’s definitely worth it . . . even though it’s at 7:00 a.m., it’s definitely worth it,” he said. “The group and the experience and the friends you make, and the stuff you get to play. It really improves you as a player.”
