This year, Parent Awareness Night will take place on Nov. 20 at 7 p.m. in the freshman cafeteria, according to CHS social worker Jane Wildman. This year the topic will be on “alarming trends in teen activities.”
Jim Grinder, Hamilton County Health Department health education specialist, is the speaker for the event. He will discuss dangerous activities that teens do and how parents can protect their children from them. According to Wildman, Grinder has given talks to many different schools around Hamilton County about health.
“We had the opportunity for this particular speaker and this is something parents need to know about,” Wildman said.
Junior Miranda Cocca said her mother will attend the meeting. Cocca said her mother allowed her brother to do the cinnamon challenge, one activity that Grinder will talk about during the meeting, and did not realize the risks it entailed.
“My mom said she wanted to hear about the dangers of it,” Cocca said.
As for Cocca, she said the activities that teens do are foolish.
“I think (these activities) are really stupid, I just don’t think (teens) are making very wise decisions,” Cocca said.
Wildman said, “It’s more of an education piece for parents to be aware and not think that it couldn’t happen to their kids or their kids’ friends.”
