Astronomy Club will feature a comet show on Dec. 6 from 7 to 8 p.m. at the CHS planetarium, according to Keith Turner, Astronomy club sponsor and planetarium director. The show will consist of a demonstration modeling comets with dry ice, a presentation about comets and discovery and a tour of the night sky.
Turner said that in the previous comet show, the audience especially enjoyed the dry ice comet demonstration.
“Comets are like dark, dirty snowballs, and dry ice is one of their main components,” Turner said. “The idea of the demo was to take dry ice, which goes from solid to gas, and pour water on ice, get it dirty and try to ball it up. I put a little bit of ammonia and baking soda to get a reaction, and that’s what comets do. They react like acid-base. You can see the fizzing. It’s a really good approximation of a little mini comet. I let the audience come up and witness it, and they got to handle it with gloves so they could feel how cold it was.”
President and senior Yanying Chen said the demonstration is one of her favorite parts of the comet show.
Chen said, “I think the hands-on experience of this comet show is unique compared to other shows. It’s good instead of just having a video on for the show.”
Turner said that another part of the comet show features Caroline Herschel, a comet hunter, and teaches the audience how to get credit if they discover a comet.
“People should come out to see it,” Turner said. “You can’t see a show like this anywhere nearby.”
